Colorado TABOR refund: check the tax year and claim status
As of October 24, 2026, the regular deadline to claim the 2025 TABOR refund has passed. Start with the year of the claim and any return already filed. A TABOR refund is not an automatic payment to every Colorado resident.

Which TABOR tax year are you checking?
TABOR concerns limits on state fiscal-year revenue; the refund is claimed for a specified income-tax year in a later filing year. For example, the 2025 return is filed in 2026. An announcement’s calendar year is not a substitute for selecting the correct return.
The 2025 return instructions required a return claiming this refund to be transmitted or postmarked by October 15, 2026. That regular claim deadline has passed. Do not interpret the ordinary income-tax filing extension, a later PTC deadline or an old refund announcement as reopening it.
An income-tax-return claim requires the applicable TABOR election, including the checkbox in the 2025 line 38 instructions. Filing a return without making the required claim is not the same as requesting the refund. Review a filed copy rather than assuming the software selected it.
If you filed on time, keep the filed return and its submission confirmation while checking processing or a notice. If you did not claim by the deadline, ask Colorado Revenue about your particular circumstances; this page does not establish a late-claim exception.

Who could qualify for the 2025 refund?
Full-year Colorado domicile is required. Simply buying goods in Denver, owning property here or moving to Colorado during the year does not establish eligibility. The guidance also addresses incarceration and a spouse who does not qualify.
Generally, a claimant must have been at least 18 at the start of 2025. The instructions provide an exception for a younger person with Colorado income-tax liability or Colorado wage withholding. Check all line 38 conditions, including the deceased-taxpayer rule, rather than using age alone.
Modified adjusted gross income used for the refund can include nontaxable Social Security and certain state or local bond interest. It is not simply the Colorado taxable-income figure. The refund credit first affects the return calculation; it is not necessarily a separate check of that amount.
- Check eligibility against the actual return
- Use the 2025 booklet’s lines 34–38 and the state’s eligibility guidance before reviewing an already-filed claim. Read the 2025 filing booklet
Is the PTC rebate deadline the same?
No. The 2025 Property Tax/Rent/Heat Credit application booklet gives December 31, 2027 as its ordinary application deadline. Its TABOR addition required filing by October 15, 2026. Being within the longer PTC window does not make a new 2025 TABOR claim timely.
PTC has its own income, age, residence and expense criteria. Some people with disabilities now use a different credit route. Check the current program instructions rather than assuming TABOR eligibility makes you eligible for PTC.
